A global dialogue in education matters. The ability to learn from international experiences, adapt evidence-based policies, and co-develop solutions across borders is crucial in navigating the increasingly complex landscape of education reform. EDT convened its third Global Dialogue event in January 2025, bringing together policymakers, educators and partners to explore key educational challenges, discuss learnings and best practices, and identify scalable, contextually relevant strategies for reform.

We are delighted to share our latest annual impact reviews. This year we have produced a global highlights review, along with three regional reviews detailing our impact in the UK, the Global South, and the Middle East and Asia.

EDT was proud to lead a recent scoping study on education system resilience (ESR), on behalf of the Global Partnership for ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ (GPE) Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). As a part of GPE KIX's Observatory Initiative, this study, ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ System Resilience: GEP KIX Study Working Paper, explores how countries understand ESR and examines the policies and practices in place for system strengthening, and to anticipate, plan for, prevent, and mitigate future crises.

The African Union (AU) Year of ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ is stimulating important discussions about the stark reality of educational underachievement in Africa, and galvinising political will around the urgent and critical need for action. However, solving the foundational learning crisis is not enough – we must also tackle Africa’s youth unemployment crisis.

The transitions from school to higher education and employment can have a significant impact on an individual’s lifetime potential. Earlier in 2023, we conducted a literature review to help us understand the challenges that girls in low-resource settings face when making their transitions. In this article we reflect on the findings of the report, the promising interventions it highlights, and some key lessons for policymakers.

´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ technology (edtech) is a huge and multifaceted area, and it has the potential to contribute to every aspect of school life and approach to education reform. Edtech can support learning and behaviour change, enable greater engagement across the education sector, and provide opportunities for better inclusion of marginalised and hard-to-reach communities.

Our fifth Annual Impact Review reveals phenomenal growth in the reach and impact of our programmes to improve education across the world. The report – focusing on the year to September 2023 – shows how we have engaged with more teachers, leaders and education systems internationally than ever before and improved outcomes and experiences for learners.

In response to concerns over youth unemployment, skills mismatches and gender labour market segmentation and in alignment with the Ministry of ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ's ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ Sector plan (2018-22) and the National Strategy for Human Resources Development (2015-25), the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is experimenting with new approaches to career guidance in partnership with the UK-based ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ (EDT).

How do teachers and school leaders protect and preserve teacher professional development when disruption hits, as in the Covid-19 pandemic? In case studies from Kenya and Rwanda, where ‘communities of practice’ were already in place to support teacher training and learning, we explore how collaborative learning and elements of technology mitigated some of the challenges facing educators during periods of school closure and remote education.

In recent years, huge strides have been made in girls’ education. In many countries, girls are now just as likely to attend primary school as boys. More girls than ever before are finishing primary school and transitioning to secondary education, and in many countries, female university graduates easily outnumber their male counterparts. So why do we still need to talk about girls’ education? In this article, we explore the systemic challenges which continue to prevent many girls from accessing and completing high-quality education, and the implications of these inequalities for millions of girls and their communities worldwide.

Climate change matters for education – and education matters in the fight against climate change. As this issue rightly continues to generate public and policy attention, it is critical that the connections between climate change and education are not overlooked. The risks posed to learners by the changing climate are very real – especially in low-and-middle-income contexts – but we must also carefully consider how education could mitigate aspects of this huge global challenge.
